Meet the Speaker:
Thomas E. Gazsi is the Chief of Public Safety & Emergency Management at the Port of Los Angeles. In this role, he oversees the Los Angeles Port Police, Los Angeles Port Pilot, and Information Technology Divisions at the nation’s largest commercial port. The port handles 8.3 million containers annually among a variety commercial vessels and cruise ships. As the largest container port in the United States, it consists of 43 miles of waterfront and 7,500 acres of land area adjacent to San Pedro and Wilmington, California in the City of Los Angeles.
The Port Police is a full service agency providing Patrol, Traffic, Criminal Investigations, Tactical Planning, Marine Unit, Dive Team, Sea Marshalls and Hazardous Materials Investigations among a variety of operations. The agency hosts the Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center in collaboration with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, providing marine operations training. The Port Pilots are responsible for ensuring a safe flow of ship traffic to and from Los Angeles Harbor by maintaining round-the-clock service. Based at Berth 68, pilots board arriving vessels in the vicinity of the Los Angeles Sea Buoy to guide incoming ships to dock. They also provide assistance to outbound ships.The Information Technology Division is responsible for the majority of the Port’s computing and telecommunication services. The ITD implements, maintains, and manages the Port’s corporate IT assets, including voice, data, servers, data center, network, desktops, and applications. In addition, the ITD provides planning and implementation support for projects led by other Divisions.
Chief Gazsi holds the ultimate responsibility for Port-related security and public safety issues. His divisions work cooperatively with associated government and law enforcement to uphold maritime laws, enforce safety and security regulations, and continually test and enhance emergency response and preparedness procedures to ensure the safety of the Port workforce and residents in the surrounding harbor communities.
Chief Gazsi previously served as the Chief of Police for the Costa Mesa Police Department from 2011 to 2014, an agency of 220 personnel a community of 117,000 in southern California. The chief previously served as the Support Services Division Commander with the Newport Beach Police Department and was responsible for Management Services, Emergency Management, Communications, Records, Property & Evidence, Personnel & Training, Planning & Research, Facilities, Fleet, Information Technology and Fiscal Services. Gazsi served a full career with the Newport Beach Police Department from 1979 through 2011. Tom has also been active in supporting a number of non-profit endeavors and has served on a variety of Boards.
Chief Gazsi is a graduate of USC’s School of Public Policy and Management where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree.
